Cultural mediation and non-attending audience

Musée des Cultures Guyanaises

French Guiana

from June 11th to 15th 2012 - Cayenne (French Guyana)

From June 11th to 15th, the Amazonian Museum Network will be gathered again for a seminar in Cayenne about cultural mediation and the non-attending audience.

The participants from Brazil, Suriname, Guyana and French Guiana, accompanied by a specialist in mediation, will present the mediation offered in their institutions. Their testimony will then be debated and analysed by professionals of the heritage sector.
This second seminar will focus on the different ways to reach the people whom do not usually come to museums. The reasons of their absence are mainly socio-cultural but also practical (distance, detention) and physical (disability).

This week of exchange will be the occasion to stress the importance of cultural mediation: To focus on the specificities of the audience helps fighting discrimination. The seminar will thus explore two themes, the identification and description of the devices developed and the limits and difficulties.
The participants will also have the opportunity to question the good methods to create adapted mediation devices by hearing the others' experience. Participants working in libraries, in bilingual teaching, against illiteracy or for the transmission of scientific knowledge have been invited.

The expert : Martine LEVY, teacher in the Ecole des Arts et de la Culture in Paris (EAC – School of Arts and Culture), previously in charge of the audience department at the Quai Branly museum, will bring an experimented contribution to this week dedicated to mediation and the museum audience. Her experience will enable us to compare our practises with what is done in France.
